In keeping with the theme from last week, it’s often the little things we do that distinguish a great company from an average one. For instance, if you are a home remodeler that specializes in kitchen remodels, the competition is great. Ask yourself, what makes my company stand out from the competition? If you are relying on your price point to be your main distinguisher, you are missing the mark.

Recently our family spent a week at a popular resort hotel in Florida. It’s a family tradition to bring along a few of our favorite stuffed animals on vacation each year. After our first day of being out and about, when we returned to our room, not only were our beds made, but the little stuffed critters were carefully placed about the room. Every night when we returned to our room, our critters were waiting for us wearing headphones or having an engaging conversation at the table. The hotel’s maid service – a treat that we take for granted – made a lasting impression on my whole family. What did the resort hotel gain from this experience? My words and the fact that I am SHARING this awesome experience with all of you! That’s the mark of a AWESOME CUSTOMER SERVICE!

This is why it is very important to take the time and think about what your company is doing that sets you apart and makes your customer say, “I’ve got to tell everyone about these people!” If you are a contractor that is completing a remodel, make it a priority to follow up with a custom gift basket and a handwritten note thanking your customer for sharing their trust and their support. This gesture doesn’t have to be something complicated or expensive; often times,  the small things will set you apart from the others.

The bottom line is that competition is fierce in all industries and many of our services are expected and are very similar. Word of mouth remains one of the most effective tools in your marketing arsenal. It’s time to set yourself apart and get your customer talking about how classy your business is!
