First impressions count.  With every new encounter, you are being evaluated.  A first impression can be nearly impossible to reverse or undo, making those first moments extremely important.

When were you especially impressed by a first impression? What can you learn from that?

Remember it takes just seven seconds for someone to form a first impression.  Here are a few tips to get you off to a great start:

Be Aware – They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and so the “picture” you first present says alot about who you are to the person you are meeting. Is your appearance saying the right things to help create the right first impression? Be polite, smile, make eye contact, dress to impress, and listen.

Be Positive – Your attitude shows through in everything you do. Project a positive attitude.  Strive to learn from your meeting and to contribute appropriately, maintaining an upbeat manner and a smile.   Even if you’re nervous or in the face of criticism, stay positive.

Be On Time – Give yourself more time than you think you need to get to the appointment and plan to get there a few minutes early. “Being late” is at the top of every list of the things that squelch a good first impression.  Someone you are meeting for the first time is not interested in your “good excuse” for running late.

Be Prepared – Prior to the introduction, take the time to research the person’s background, as well as their company information.  It may also help you formulate questions for your meeting.

Be Selfless – It’s not about you.  Creating successful impressions is about understanding that it’s all about the other person. Make it all about them, what are the benefits your product and/or services provides to the other person?

Be Yourself – It’s important that you are calm.  If you are calm and confident, the other person will feel more at ease, and a solid foundation will be laid for making that first impression a good one.
