For many of us it is not easy to say no especially when it comes to the workplace. One of the most important things you can learn in life is the confidence of being able to say no. At work many of us are hesitant to say “no” when at times the the BEST answer to give for all who are involved would be “no.” In fact, the ability to turn down an opportunity or a request with a respectful response can enhance a work environment. Learning to say no may be the most important personal and professional skill that a person can perfect. Here are three ways that this can benefit not only you but your entire organization:

  • Saying “no” can open the door for opportunity for a coworker. A good rule of thumb when asked to commit to a task it to ask yourself, “Am I the best person to do this?” The answer to this question may vary from day to day. Your answer is dependent on your expertise and the tasks that you have going on at the time the request is made. If you find that you do not have the time or expertise to commit fully to a project or an event, it would be wise to say “no” and provide a solution. This will allow others an opportunity and ensure that the task is done well and on time.
  • Saying “no” can take a load off of your mind allowing you to focus on your priorities.  The worst time to commit is when you are tired, stressed out, in the middle of something else, or perhaps just really excited about the topic–and that’s usually when you’ll be asked for help! If you have taken on too many assignments, you can quickly become overwhelmed and resentful.
  • Saying “no” reflects respect for your team. When people learn that you will turn down a request for assistance with an honest and valid reason as to why you are unable to do a task, you will gain respect. By doing this your coworkers will learn that a “yes” is a solid and committed resolve to take on the task, and your “no” is based on a valid reason of concern that the end product may not be the best that you have to offer. This concern for the best interest of your company will position you as trustworthy and dependable team player in the long run.

In daily life, both at work and home, we all have lots of opportunities to say yes. Knowing why, when, and how to say “no” at work is critical to your quality of life at work and at home. The life skill of becoming comfortable with “no” can be life changing!
