Memorial Day is upon us. For many, it’s a three-day weekend that ushers in the summer vibes for which we’ve longed. But before you schedule your company’s social media post for Monday, take a moment to reflect on the holiday’s intention.

Saying “Happy Memorial Day” can rub some of your customers and business contacts the wrong way. It’s understandable. Memorial Day is meant to honor military men and women who gave their lives in the line of duty, giving it a more somber meaning than most other holidays. It’s more a day of remembrance than celebration.

From honoring the military to honoring summer, here are tips for Memorial Day social media success:

  • Don’t say “Happy Memorial Day.” Keep in mind that for many, this is a painful day of remembrance.
  • If you post on Monday, thank the military. Here’s an appropriate example: “Today we thank those who have served and sacrificed for our nation, and those who continue to do so.”
  • If you’d like to focus on the long weekend, that’s okay! Just schedule the post for any day other than Monday, and don’t mention Memorial Day.
  • Remember you don’t have to say anything at all. Hey! No pressure to schedule a post for the holiday. If you’re having trouble deciding on what to share, it’s okay to sit this one out.

Whether you choose to post or not is up to you, but follow these guidelines to avoid a potential faux pas. We hope you and your families have a safe holiday weekend!
