There are few things more purely aggravating than hopping in the car on a Monday morning to start the commute—and realizing that you are out of gas. Sure, it might have been better to hit the gas station on Sunday afternoon, but it was the weekend and you chose to leave it for Monday and now you are in a jam!

If this sounds familiar to you, we would like to share a thought: Fuel up before you’re on empty! This is a nice motto to live by not only when it comes to transportation, but also in your work day. It’s all about anticipating future needs and planning how you are going to fulfill them before the panic sets in.

Here’s an example of how this applies to work life. Say you’ve got a big product or service launch happening in one month. Normally you would choose to wait until the last week to prepare, promote, and lay the groundwork for this launch. When you do this, you most likely stress and run low on fuel! It is best to plan ahead, consider the scope of the task and pinpoint those areas that could be potential obstacles. Determine your solutions so that when all comes down to the wire, you can focus on excellence in delivery rather than putting out fires.

Consider these four efficient and effective “fueling” tips to be considered before your tank is empty:

Don’t Take The Scenic Route. How many of you procrastinate? This can often be the result of tackling those things that “you prefer” rather than those that are more important. Some people say that they work better under pressure, and while this may be true for a select few, don’t drag the rest of your team off track by waiting until the last minute.

Detour From Quick Fixes. Just as we find with “fast food” and its effect on your sustained energy level, there is no fast way to build and sustain a successful business. It takes thought, strategy, and a lot of patience. In order to be successful, you must consistently put time, money and energy into your work. Failing to “fill up” will only lead to loss of business and an empty tank.

Conserve Energy for Detours. Our workday is filled will planned activities and those “things that come up.” You must conserve energy for those things that create a detour in your day. If you don’t, these detours can often trigger a stress button, or distract us from other tasks that cause us to teeter on empty at the end of the day.
