As we set out in 2014, let’s take a moment to think about the year ahead and how we can contribute to making it a success both in the workplace and in our home. We have all had people in our lives that stood out as leaders – people who we respect and admire. A leader is the one that other look to for answers and a great person from which to learn.

A common quality in a successful leaders is simply the confidence in how they approach a task, a relationship, and even the attitude that is shown when faced with a challenge or adversity. A confident leader that leads with kindness and integrity will gain the respect and attention of those that he leads.  Whether you consider yourself a leader or a follower – it is important to acquire some leadership skills that can change your life and affect the lives of those around you.

Stop Down and Look Around You – Take one hour in a busy place and be still – just look around you and listen. Take mental notes on what you see and hear, and just take it all in. You will be amazed at what you can learn just by opening your eyes and your ears, and closing your mouth. Assess those around you and take in the positives and note the negatives in behavior as well. Learn from the good and the not so good!

Take Time To Make Decisions – We all know that in a work day there are times when decisions need to be made quickly. However, many “big” decisions that will affect the lives of others – including home and workplace – should be made with great thought.  You must consider how your decision will affect all involved, and be confident in your final decision. A slow “yes” is better than a fast “no” in most cases.

Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously – Laughter can be the best medicine in life. As your team shares in laughter this will create comfort and happiness within the team. And we all agree that happy people make things happen. In the long run, customers and potential employees that see the happiness in your team will want to join. You will attract the best of the best.

We are entering a brand new year … and there is not better time to adjust your attitude, show respect to those around you, explore the opportunities for growth with confidence and before you know it, the leader in you will stand out in a crowd!
